CDP and NZDPU partner to make climate data openly accessible

The Customer Data Platform (CDP) and Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) have announced that they are expanding their collaboration to make climate data accessible to everyone. This partnership aims to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement by making data openly available through NZDPU's platform.

This partnership provides access to high-quality, comparable climate data so private equity/credit firms, asset managers, and impact investors can better assess the climate-related risks and opportunities for their potential investments.

Let's discuss the expansion of the CDP and NZDPU partnership in detail.

About the CDP and NZDPU partnership

The partnership between the CDP and NZDPU was first established in June 2022 to enhance climate data accessibility. After a few weeks, CDP declared NZDPU as a centralized repository for climate-transition-related information. The collaboration between the two entities took a significant step forward on September 20, 2023, when CDP provided core climate data for NZDPU's proof of concept initiative. Finally, on September 24, 2024, the partnership expanded to make climate data on more than 10,000 companies available for free to democratize access to essential climate information and support climate goals.

The CEO of CDP, Sherry Madera, said: "CDP is proud to advance our partnership with the NZDPU and to serve as its foundational global data provider. Our data has shaped markets for nearly 25 years, but it is critical to ensure it is freely available for the public good. It is open to access for any user – from consumers to government – to drive positive decisions for our planet. This collaboration demonstrates the efficient ecosystem we can build by working together to streamline reporting and avoid duplication. Companies can disclose through CDP to provide core climate data to the NZDPU. A new use case and access point, and no additional reporting."

Key aspects of the CDP and NZDPU partnership expansion

  • For the first time, NZDPU will openly access more than 10,000 companies' core climate data for free, representing more than 50% of the global market cap of data. The core climate-related data will include GHG emissions and emissions reduction targets and detailed sector-specific data from companies that disclose data publicly through their platforms.

  • The NZDPU platform, overseen by the Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC), allows users to quickly identify, access, and conclude the core set of private sector data critical for accelerating progress towards meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement.

  • CDP and the NZDPU are working to streamline climate reporting, avoid duplication, and increase global access to comparable, consistent private-sector climate data. The companies can provide the NZDPU with core climate data on their platform, streamlining the reporting process and reducing the organization's burden.
